Teaching Social Networking Tools in the classroom

I think discussing social networking tools in the classroom is essential.  Talking about the pros and cons of many social networking platforms is important.  You could talk about what their facebook page (or other social networking tool) might look like, what they would put on it and include the dos and don’ts.  You could then have them make a book about social networking.  They could create a facebook page and share what they might include on it.  As well, they could use another networking tool (twitter, blog) in the book and what they would include on it.  Students could also include the pros and cons of each tool and how to use each tool responsibly.

I think that these skills should definitely be addressed in the classroom.  Students need to be taught how to be responsible users when it comes to social networking.  Why?  The rational is that students are on them and we are using them in the classroom.  A lot of educators believe that social networking has a good impact on education.  Times are changing and we need to embrace this form of learning and teach our students how use them effectively.
